Swiss Alpine Marathon

25 July 2015

The Swiss Alpine Marathon is celebrating 30 years in 2015 and it all takes place in the gorgeous town of Davos, the largest resort for holidays in the Swiss Alps. It is a place of superlatives, being the highest town in the Alps at 1,560m.

The Swiss Alpine Marathon really is the run that has something for everybody, including families, where they provide child care while mum and dad are running.

For your running experience there is an event for every level of ability. For the determined ultra-runner there is the showpiece of the Swiss Alpine Marathon, the 78km event, the world’s biggest mountain ultra-marathon, 12km of which is run in high alpine terrain. This challenging event attracts over 1,000 runners.

The 42km marathon is a demanding, high alpine tour which offers runners an amazing natural backdrop. This is definitely not a course for your PB and you may find that you run anything up to 90mins slower than you would normally.

The 30km is a scenic route and downhill overall but has a few testing climbs. The 21km is a relatively gentler option, running up through the valley, and the 10km involves a lap around the town and into the forest. Nordic walkers are also catered for over 21km and 10km. Of course there’s a Kids Run over distances from 500m to 1.4km.

Trail running is extremely popular in Europe and this is one of the best trail runs around. The combination of magnificent scenery, great trails, excellent hiking and a real family atmosphere makes this a trip that is enjoyable on many levels.

In and Around

If the scenery alone isn’t enough to leave you spellbound, there are many great things to do around Davos.

For rail enthusiasts there is the Albula Railway Museum and Rail Trail; the Bernina Express train takes you across one of the most spectacular alpine crossings from Davos to St Moritz and onto Tirano (Italy); Tarasp Castle has walls that are over 1000 years old; the 100 year old National Park in Zernez is a paradise for nature lovers whether it be hiking, animal spotting or bird watching; and the Monstein Brewery is the highest brewery in Europe. Or there is golf, walking, mountain biking, sailing or ride the cable cars!

For those who wish to explore more of Switzerland there are endless possibilities with spectacular destinations such as Zermatt, Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lucerne and the shore of Lake Geneva, surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards.
