Paris Marathon, 3rd April 2016
The Paris Marathon will celebrate its 40th edition in 2016 so now is the time to plan your trip to this unforgettable marathon where you can run 42.195km in the most beautiful city in the world. The Paris Marathon could well rate as “the best marathon in the world” when it comes to drop dead gorgeous scenery, atmosphere, crowd support (250,000 of them!), flat course and the general joie de vivre!
Where else can you run past so many iconic landmarks? Firstly there is the start in the Champs-Élysées, with the Arc de Triomphe as a backdrop, possibly the best start line in the world. The marathon then becomes a scenic tour of Paris….. Concorde, Bastille, Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Seine and the Musee d’Orsay. The marathon course is bookended on the east and west sides by the beautiful Bois (Park) de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne. It is difficult to imagine where else in the world you can run a marathon and see so many outstanding sites along the way.
The Paris Marathon is a truly international event, attracting 150 nationalities, with 42% of the field coming from abroad. Which is not that surprising given that Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world.
In and Around
Paris is the city of endless surprises and it is confident that it’s the world’s most beautiful, fashionable and artistic capital. It’s hard to disagree! The city has some of the most spectacular buildings and monuments in Europe and the ambience is exciting, alluring and effortlessly romantic.
You could spend weeks or even months wandering around the city as there is so much to see and experience. Some of the best known museums in the world await you; as do the art galleries; the many iconic sights (as listed above on the marathon course) exquisite restaurants, bistros and cafes in sublime local areas; frequent markets where you can purchase fresh produce, breads, cheese and the mandatory vin rouge.
There is also Sacre Coeur, if you can battle the crowds, followed by a walk through the eclectic Montmartre. And when you talk about Paris you must mention the views. Not only the breath taking view from the Eiffel Tower but the Tour Montparnasse provides some of the most impressive views in Paris. And there’s nothing more fun than watching the chaotic traffic from the Arc de Triomphe.
Beyond Paris there is a world of beauty to explore – the countryside, villages, hamlets, bushwalking, local markets, meandering roads and cycle paths. From the foothills of the alps to the wineries of Bordeaux and the southern attractions of Nice, Marseilles, Cannes and the French Riviera, France has everything - in abundance.
Daily flights are available with the major carriers. Another option is to fly into or out of London as an extension to your trip and catch the Eurostar, which is a very short hop between two great destinations!
